An Evening of Literary Reflection and Spiritual Inquiry

Dehradun witnessed an evening of literary reflection and spiritual inquiry as Prabha Khaitan Foundation hosted The Write Circle featuring author Shalini Modi. The session brought together literature enthusiasts, seekers, and cultural connoisseurs for an engaging exploration of mythology, philosophy, and contemporary thought.

The author was in conversation with Pooja Khanna, Ehsaas Woman of Dehradun, whose poised moderation guided the discussion with warmth and depth. The evening commenced with a gracious welcome by Pooja Marwah, Ehsaas Woman of Dehradun, setting the tone for a thoughtful and enriching dialogue.

Tracing the origins of her literary journey, Modi reflected on the deep influence of Indian epics during her childhood. “It all started when I was a kid and I was told stories from the Ramayan and Mahabharata,” she shared, adding that over time she began searching for the symbolism hidden within these narratives. Speaking on the balance between devotion and reason, she remarked, “It began with faith and then it led to intellectual inquiry,” emphasising the importance of questioning alongside belief.

One of the most compelling segments of the evening revolved around the concept of rasa and emotional balance. Explaining emotions through a simple yet profound analogy, Modi observed, “When we drink a juice, it leaves an aftertaste and so does emotion.” Reflecting on shanta rasa, she described it as a state of calmness and harmony, drawing references to the divine relationship of Shiva and Parvati.

Discussing her work on Surya, the Hindu deity of the Sun, Modi described the experience of writing the book as “almost like a divine calling.” Seamlessly weaving together mythology, astrology, science, and lived experience, she observed, “You can see how science, astrology, and mythology cross paths.” Speaking about sacred spaces, she reflected that ancient temples hold immense energy because of generations of faith and prayer associated with them.

The discussion also touched upon femininity, destiny, and personal responsibility. On astrology, Modi offered a balanced perspective, clarifying, “Astrology is not science, the making of the patri is science,” while emphasising that individual effort remains central to shaping one’s life.

The evening concluded with an engaging audience interaction, followed by a heartfelt vote of thanks by Pooja Marwah. Shalini Modi was felicitated by Suman Marwah with terracotta artefacts from Central India, bringing the thoughtful literary gathering to a graceful close.
